Miracle on 34th Street

Happy New Year! I love the holiday season especially as it allows me to watch some great movies which I have not seen in a long time. And so it came to pass that I saw a small section of the wonderful ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ – the original of course.

I watched the scene in the courtroom where Mr Claus has to prove that he truly is Santa Clause. So his lawyer calls in the son of the prosecutor to take the stand. Within the next 60 seconds the lawyer has set himself up for a lifetime on the criminal register, child molester register and of course being disbarred forever.

First he calls this clearly well under age child to take the stand in court. He should have consulted social services first, some child shrink I suspect, an expert on child witnesses and then of course the child could only provide evidence through a video link.

Not in this movie. The child leaps up and happily embarrasses his father completely – the tough prosecutor goes very limp.

As soon as the child is finished crucifying his father the lawyer (not the father) lifts the child out of the witness box. Ouch!

Clearly he had not done his health and safety training on lifting objects. How do I come to this audacious conclusion?

Well, that is easy. In the first place it did not exist at the time, so it is a safe assumption.

Secondly, the way he lifts the child could seriously hurt his back. He got lucky this time, but it was against regulations, so out with the man.

And then the final touch – the absolute killer. The lawyer picks up an underage child? Can you imagine a school teacher doing that and keeping their job? Not anymore!

No, these scenes do not meet 21st century standards and so I recommend that this version of ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ be banned until after the watershed. It could give the younger generation the idea that there may have been a time people acted naturally, acted as human beings.

And on that happy note I wish you all the very best for 2011 and hope and pray that the coalition does something about the vast silliness in regulations – so far it does not look good. They are all busy studying how to spend as much money as possible studying snow plough methods at airports. Good excuse for some on site studies me thinks.

Hi Dirk, it's a bit late, but Happy New Year !

One of the amusing things about the original version of "Miracle on 34th Street" (which I like too and agree is much better than the remake) is that it has a few words of Dutch in it. When the orphan girl visits Santa's grotto, she speaks Dutch, and Kris Kringle replies in Dutch. A couple of years ago when we watched it I suddenly realised that for the first time I could understand that small part of the film.
